Astor Street Opry Company Announces
The 2011 Original Script Competition
Cast Announcement

*********************

The ASOC is pleased to announce the casts for the 3rd Annual New Works Festival featuring winning one act plays and monologs from over 30 entries from coast to coast which ran from July to November 2011.The pieces will be performed the first three weeks of February and are sponsored by the Astoria Cooperative and a grant from the Clatsop County Arts Coalition.

The fairytale One Act comedy LOBSTER MAN was written by Jonathan Cook of Georgia. In this post-apocalyptic story directed by Edward James performed by Steve Wood, Renee Meiffren and Eric Bredleau, the only survivors of world wide destruction are a young man and woman. They sustain themselves on scavenged supplies and a fairytale of salvation, called "Lobster Man". Will he bring them new hope? Or is it only a dream? "The world is not the same as it was, there are no friendly greetings…the only sound out there is the wind…we are the voice of the world now. Me and you…"

The second One Act, RADDING VS. GLAZER, written by Steve Karp of New York and directed by Anne MacGregor, will be performed by Eric Keto, Rebecca McDonald and Lynn Hadley. In this winning story, two women patrons of a trendy beauty shop mistakenly walk off with each other's Christian Dior possum-fur-lined raincoat. In their increasingly irrational efforts to return the coats, the innocent shop owner is mercilessly caught up in the dueling women's rage, the likes of which could easily set off World War II!

For the winning monologs ASOC has chosen two scripts including THE ECHO OF HIS FACE written by Dan Morra from Pennsylvania. This poignant tragedy will be directed by Jayne Osborn, with performances by Kaye Shepherd, Brian Allen, Dave Bergquist, Shannon Shepler, Justin Robert Germond, Bill Carr and Eric Bredleau. It tells the story of a soldier killed in Iraq and his young widow as she recalls their short time together, reliving the joys of their love and the pain of her loss as she struggles to keep his memory alive.

The second monolog is the comedic piece CAPTIVE written by returning local Seaside author Keyaho Rohlfs, with performances by Aly Hansen and Kirk House and directed by Del Corbett. In this piece we find a teenage girl center stage in the lights and costume with time on her hands and scared. Will someone in the audience save her? Will she ever get off stage? Will she learn how to juggle? You will recognize yourself or someone you know in this "tip of the clown hat" from the playwright to the world of community theatre.

The ASOC 3rd Annual New Works Festival opens with a champagne celebration at the ASOC Playhouse, 129 West Bond Street, Uniontown, Astoria on Thursday February 2nd and will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening until February 18th at 7:30pm with the doors opening at 7:000pm.
